Article from Eating out in Cornwall - Oct 2010
The British Travel Award title is the result of a public vote each year. And for 2009 Cornwall has been crowned the UK's
best holiday destination. The previous years winner having been the Lake District. The holiday industry and tourism are the
largest employers within Cornwall and make up 25% of the counties economy with 5 million visitors visiting Cornwall in
recent years.
The beaches and coastline of Cornwall are a big attraction. Cormwall has
over 300 beaches and miles of rugged coastline.
For North
Cornwall attractions include:
- 60 miles of rugged Heritage Coastline. The Cornish coast has sandy beaches, hidden coves and pretty fishing villages such as Port Isaac, see location map of Port Isaac. Cornwall has the longest stretch of coastline of any county in UK and for 258 miles the Cornwall Coastal Footpath follows the coast, more details of walks from gentle strolls to long hikes on the South West Coast footpath.
- The coastal foot path passes through many villages, such as Tintagel, Port Isaac, Port Quinn, Polzeath, Rock. Past stretches of sandy beach and cliff tops only visible to those walking Cornwalls paths.
- The rugged beauty of Bodmin Moor. A vast area of moorland and protruding tors of granite. Notoriously famous for the beast of Bodmin, thought to be a wild cat or escaped cat from the zoo. But a huge area for walkers to explore.
- Eden Project at St Austell. Known worldwide, Eden is a huge garden with tropical biomes that covers an area the size of 30 football pitches. This garden has been called the 8th wonder of the world, and set in Cornwall.
- Country houses. Such as Lanhydrock House set in 1000 acres and owned by National Trust.
- Medieval castles such as Tintagel, with King Arthurs Tintagel Castle.
- Market towns of Wadebridge, Padstow and Camelford. Stroll around the shops and enjoy these towns in Cornwall.
- Plus The Tate St Ives national gallery in St Ives. The National Maritime Museum of Cornwall at Falmouth won
Gold in South West Tourism Excellence Award. The museum celebrates boats, the sea and Cornwall and now includes
an Under the Sea section.
